Vintage Pioneer SX 550 receiver after full restoration - Pioneer SX-550 is one of the smaller receivers produced by Pioneer. It is the successor of the SX-535 and produces as much as 20 watts per channel. It was introduced in 1977 and was discontinued in 1977. It features the standard styling of the late 1970s Pioneer SX line with a silver dial and faceted knobs. It had wooden side panels, but the top panel was metal. In the beginning, its list price was almost $250, but dropped to around $200.00 in 1977. This made the SX-550 very affordable for someone on an audio budget.

Of course, the lower retail price came at the expense of local production, as Pioneer outsourced its production to the Republic of Korea. It weighs approximately 21 pounds and measures 18 x 15.5 x 12 inches

    Super clear stereo FM/AM receiver

To what extent does good clean electronics circuit design contribute to better tonal quality? Find out with a test listen to the all-new Pioneer SX-550. They used a very large custom-designed integrated circuit board in the preamp and tuner sections to almost completely eliminate shielded wire connections inside. This in turn reduces the loss of vital high-frequency signals to virtually zero, greatly increasing tonal realism.

Particularly good RIAA equalization (±0.3 dB) and equally good S/N parameters and dynamic range were achieved in the SX-550 phono equalizer. CR type tone control circuitry, versatile dual-deck tape/dubbing monitor, FET and IC equipped FM/AM section (with stereo PLL demodulator IC) and other excellent features make the SX-550 even more value in its class.

Continuous output power is super stable 20 watts per channel, min. RMS, into 8 ohms from 20 to 20,000 Hz, with a total harmonic distortion of not more than 0.3%. The good, clean design of the Pioneer SX-550 inside and out makes all the difference. It's a difference you can hear in your Pioneer Hi-Fi system.
